Herriots – 2011

Posted on Updated on

Night reviewed: Wednesday

Herriots is first and foremost a hotel rather than a pub and has only just re-opened after a refurbishment. The décor of the bar area fits the hotel image, it’s nice enough, although we would question the wisdom of matching lurid green wallpaper with purple paint and the soft furnishings seemed to clash also (although what do we know about interior design). Having only just re-opened it still smalls of paint, but we won’t hold that against them. What we will hold against them is the playing of elevator music, you know, the kind that makes you want to slit your wrists after about a minute. Not a good start!

The second disappointment came from the lack of beer choice. The “large selection of beers, quality cask ales..” translated into Theakstons Best Bitter, or Theakstons Best Bitter. There were two other taps once containing (or in anticipation of containing) Copper Dragon beers, but the back of the pump labels were just there to taunt us. However, the beer was very tasty, which did make up for the lack of choice.

If you’re after a quick beer when you’re staying in the hotel, or waiting for the train (it’s opposite the station), then it’s OK. However, we made a quick exit to move on to somewhere easier on the eyes and ears.

Beer Choice (1 – 5): 1
Beer Quality (1 – 10): 8.5
Service (1 – 10): 8
Atmosphere (1 – 5): 1.5
Décor (1 – 5): 2.5
Toilets (1 – 5): 3.5

TOTAL: 25 (out of 40)
